"The god that failed" é um tema dos Metallica presente no seu álbum homónimo - "Black album", como é vulgarmente conhecido - de 1991.
James Hetfield, vocalista e guitarrista da banda, escreveu a letra numa alusão à fé humana e à crença num deus que não retribui o amor. A experiência vivida pelo músico ao assistir à negação da mãe em aceitar os tratamentos hospitalares na sequência de um cancro sob o pretexto de que a sua fé em deus seria suficiente para a levar à cura inspiraram-no a escrever o tema. Ainda hoje Hetfield culpa os valores da cientologia pela morte da mãe.
